I tried to teach my children the same when they were younger because they didn't understand why they couldn't have everything they wanted when they wanted. I was a single parent for about eight years and I shared with my daughter the fact that we had bills to pay before we had fun. The best thing to teach them is to live on less than they make. No credit cards or car payments. They'll never get in money trouble by doing that. Be happy with the stuff that money can't buy, like time with their mom. Make sure to show 'em that work equals money, just like the real world.
