pop can tabs

We’re saving pop can tabs at work (aka. soda pop can tabs, coke can tabs, carbonated beverage can tabs, aluminum can tabs).

A friend of a co-worker is battling cancer. It began a few years ago as breast cancer and after a year or so of remission, is now in her rib cage.

For every gallon of pop can tabs, this 38 year old mom of 2 children can have 30 minutes of chemotherapy for no charge. She’s begun chemotherapy twice a week along with radiation treatments.

Would you save your pop can tabs? Send me an email for my mailing address and I will take them to my co-worker to give to her friend.

  1. Okay, as Jackie stated, the idea that collected pop/soda tabs can be redeemed for dialysis/chemo is NOT true. Alas, at the bottom of the snopes page is the rest of the story: Ronald McDonald House will do something with them. http://www.snopes.com/business/redeem/pulltabs.asp

They are redeemed for the weight only, and therefore, are worth less than if people would collect the entire cans, trade them in at a recycler, and then donate the money directly to the charity/person of their choosing.

Here is the direct link to Ronald McDonald House’s explanation http://www.rmhdallas.com/donate/pop_tabs.html

  2. Natalie, okay, so I kept searching. Maybe this is possible ?? Seems like a strange promotion–who is paying for it?

Here are a couple of other items of evidence that something like this is actually happening. “Jackson County (IL) 4-H On May 1, visits were made to Carruthers, GJAL, and Giant City schools for the final pick up of tabs students had been collecting since the project began in mid-February. The truck was filled with an estimated 400 lbs. of tabs. Thank you, students and faculty!”

and another “Soda Can Tabs - free Dialysis.
St. Timothy’s collects soda and soup can tabs. For every pound collected, 1/2 hour of free dialysis is provided to someone in need. Please remove can tabs, collect and send to school c/o Karen O’Tormey.”

While I still have serious questions about it, I guess I’m obliged to collect them now too. Whatever else I find out, I will post here to share it.

  3. I spoke with my coworker & she swore that this lady is able to take pop can tabs in to the cancer treatment center and receive credit for treatment. I’m still collecting them.

  4. Hey y’all. What happened?
I know someone here who meticulously collects the tab tops. It sounds really fishy. A Google search turned up this post. Can you please give an update?

    Thank you.

  5. Well, it is very sad that this is a rumor. My co-worker goes to church with this lady & their congregation has been gathering pop tabs for her. I guess they’ve not ever tried to cash them in to be told that it’s not true.

I will ask more about it on Monday at work & see if they’ve actually been told this by the cancer treatment center of if they were just told this by some person off the street with good intentions.

    Thanks, Jackie.

  6. I hate to say this, but the idea of collecting pop tabs for treatment time is on snopes.com as a myth. I’d be 100% certain that they could actually be redeemed before getting involved with this.
