coke tab

My twelve year old son asked me last night if a coke tab that he swallowed yesterday (accidentally he says - how do you do that accidentally??) will come out later when he goes to the bathroom.

I said that I thought it would.

Have you ever heard of anyone doing something like this? Now I’m worried that it will cause an obstruction in his bowels and that he will need surgery to have it removed and to repair any damage it causes.

I really cannot believe that I’m even thinking about this.

EDIT:  I called the pediatrician this morning.  The nurse told me that it should pass within a week.  If he has abdominal pain, I’m to take him to the ER immediately.

    What goes in - must come out!
    When Elizabeth was 4, she swallowed a marble - laying on the bed, playing it with it and it “fell” into her mouth. I, too, called the doctor and they told me the same thing - except that I had to check each time just to make sure it passed okay! Well, I checked for about 4 days straight - definitely not my idea of fun! I never did find it and decided I must have missed it! We never found it yet and she’s 27 - so now I’m sure we missed it!

  2. I’m not sure how you accidentally do that- especially at 12 years old ;) Hope everything is okay and someday it will be a very funny story.

  3. I’m with you, how would you do that accidentally? Maybe he was just really thirsty? LOL.
    I hope it all comes out okay (no pun intended).

  4. LOL! I think he will be fine. The digestive tract is more flexible and durable than you might think. I have never heard of anyone “accidentally” swallowing a Coke tab, but I know of kids and adults who swallowed much bigger things and those items passed through with no problems.

  5. my brother swallowed a dime once. it, uh, passed through ok.
    mom probably made him eat prunes, she did that a lot when we ate things that were unusual for us.
