prizes, a goal, and a happy face

The first meeting of youngest daughter’s diabetes group counseling was yesterday. The group will meet twice a month and is for tweens who have type I diabetes. There’s also a group for teens. The groups are being facilitated by the counselor we worked with in December and January, who was recommended by daughter’s endocrinologist. The endo. knows him after he did a rotation in the endocrinology unit at Children’s Hospital during his residency.

Youngest daughter has protested going to this group since she was first invited to attend. I kept telling her that it would be ok once she got there. In typical tween fashion, she did not believe me.

When we walked up to the office, daughter said (emphatically), “This is it. I’m not coming to this again. One time. For you. And. That’s. It.”

When she came out this afternoon, she had a huge smile on her face. She’d had the best blood sugar reading of the group and won two prizes, a water bottle and a gift certificate for a free meal at Chili’s. She set a goal to work toward over the next 2 weeks and the counselor will check her blood sugar meter next time to see if she’s met her goal.

As we were driving home, she said, “Mom, you were right. It was ok once I got there. It’s a lot easier to talk in a group than it was to talk to him one on one. I felt dorky when it was just me. With other kids, I felt like they understood and it was ok.”

That, I believe, is the whole point. :)
